Book Review | Do You Believe?

Doctrine and theology are essential in our Christian living. No Christian can say he loves God yet does not desire to know Him. That is a big contradiction. Doctrines help us to know God and shape our spiritual life. Another contradiction arises when there is a disparity between what we profess and believe as Christians and how we live.

In Do You Believe?, pastor and best-selling author Paul David Tripp takes a close look at the 12 core doctrines of Christianity and how they engage and transform the human heart and mind. He talks about the dangerous dichotomy—the gap between what we say we believe and the way we live—and challenges us to not only intellectually understand what the Bible teaches but also live them out.

“The doctrines of the word of God were not intended just to lay claim on your brain, but also to capture your heart and transform the way you live.”

Paul David Tripp, Do You Believe

What I love most about this book is Tripp’s presentation of the doctrines which I find brilliant and powerful. He presented each doctrine first and then in the succeeding chapter, he explained how the particular doctrine will impact your everyday life. It boils down to these two things: orthodoxy and orthopraxy—right doctrine and right practice—and he presented them very well.

The twelve doctrines are as follows:

  • The Doctrine of Scripture
  • The Doctrine of God
  • The Doctrine of the Holiness of God
  • The Doctrine of God’s Sovereignty
  • The Doctrine of God’s Omnipotence
  • The Doctrine of Creation
  • The Doctrine of the Image of God in Man
  • The Doctrine of Sin
  • The Doctrine of Justification
  • The Doctrine of Sanctification
  • The Doctrine of Perseverance and Glorification of the Saints
  • The Doctrine of Eternity

This book is written in a very accessible, practical way. As Tripp explicitly noted, this book is not an exhaustive systematic theology. His warm and skillful writing will surely engage readers and stir their affection for God and godliness. His experience as a long-time pastor is beautifully manifested in this book as he communicated the truths of what the Bible teaches.

Do You Believe? is both edifying and challenging. It will rouse your mind to know God more and at the same time challenge you to live out that knowledge and make it your everyday lifestyle. If you are looking for a concise book on practical theology or an introduction to the core doctrines of the Christian faith, look no further.
