Review | KJV Large Print Thinline Bible (Genuine Leather)

Two months ago, I reviewed and featured a new line of large print thinline KJV Bibles from Thomas Nelson called the Vintage Series. In that review, I explicitly noted that they are among the most beautiful (and inexpensive) non-premium Bibles I have ever gazed upon. I didn’t know things are just getting even better. Thomas Nelson just released an irresistible follow-up to the series with the KJV Large Print Thinline Bible in black genuine leather.

In a nutshell, this is an upgraded edition of the KJV Vintage Series Bibles which are only available in leathersoft covers. Like the aforementioned, this Bible features an exclusive Thomas Nelson KJV Comfort Print typeface designed by 2K/Denmark, set at 11.5-point font to provide maximum readability. The texts are bold and clear, and indeed very readable. On the other hand, they are not line-matched and there is visible ghosting on this Bible’s 30 gsm paper. The double-column, verse-by-verse layout references traditional Bible typeset. This Bible has no cross-references and has an overall dimension of 6.70 x 9.75 x 1.10 inches.

While this Bible has the same layout, text block, and pagination as the Vintage Series Bibles, it has a better design, built, and materials. This Bible boasts a stunning black genuine leather cover with very pronounced grains and pebbling. I have no information as to what type of leather this is, but the quality is impeccable. It is almost comparable to the premium goatskin leathers used on the Premier Collection Bibles. Adding a premium look to the cover, the spine features five raised hubs with gold stamp outlines. The front cover and spine are also gold-stamped with “Holy Bible” in a gothic typeface which gives a nice vintage vibe to it. The pages are smyth-sewn which causes it to lay-fully flat when open. While this Bible is proudly bound in genuine leather, it has a paste-down vinyl liner instead of the more durable edge-lining. With this Bible’s retail price of $109.99, I honestly believe it should have had the latter.

Appearance-wise, my most favorite feature of this Bible is the classic red-stained page edges. It does not only give a regal look to the Bible but also nostalgic feels to the reader. Over time, this classic and traditional page-edge design declined in popularity and was eventually replaced by gilding. I am so happy to see Bible publishers reviving it again! The red-stained edges look really beautiful with the words of Christ that are printed in the same color. This Bible also contains three extra-long black double-sided satin ribbon markers, six full-color maps, and a presentation page.

Final thoughts

The KJV Large Print Thinline Bible in black genuine leather is an exceptional upgrade to the already available KJV Vintage Series Bibles. If you enjoy using the latter or are interested in getting one, this gives you a better and more durable option. However, I find the price tag a little bit steep as there are other Bibles (even premium ones) that are available at the same price range, and have better linings and paper. This Bible is currently marked-down at $79.99 on and would definitely make a perfect gift this Christmas.
