With an aim to preserve the legacy of theologians of the past, RefToons produce humorous and thought-provoking comic strips that bring clarity to various biblical teachings through visual storytelling. Among their most recent offerings is The Illustrated Baptist Catechism.
The Illustrated Baptist Catechism is based on the 1693 Baptist Catechism or most commonly known as Keach’s Catechism. Divided into 11 sections, this book showcases a total of 114 catechism questions and answers with the purpose of teaching the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. If you are following RefToons on social media, you probably have already seen many of the illustrations included in this book, or best of all, have seen first-hand as Paul Cox draws some of the illustrations on Instagram live.
Appearance-wise, this book is very attractive. From its cover to its paper, this book screams quality. It measures 8.75” x 8.75” and is around half an inch thick. The catechisms and full-color illustrations are printed on high-glossy paper. The 140+ pages are sewn and bound together in a hardboard cover for maximum durability.
Aside from the outstanding physical attributes, the highlight of this book is of course its content, the catechisms. I like that each catechism question and answer is formatted in a way that they take up a whole page. With this, the texts are printed large and are very readable. Proof texts are also included in a smaller font found at the lower right corner of each page. It contains the original text of the catechism which is set in Elizabethan English, and all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version Bible. I would not consider this as a downside, but I think it would have been much better if a modernized text of the catechism was used to make it more readable to modern audiences.
The cherry on top of these catechisms is the astounding illustrations of RefToons founder and illustrator, Paul Cox. They are engaging and sometimes very humorous. I really enjoy every time spent with this book. It is an absolute pleasure reading and browsing through its pages! I honestly think it is a brilliant, engaging, and effective tool in catechizing and discipling especially children. The illustrations will surely capture their attention and engage their hearts and minds into understanding the catechisms.
I can’t recommend this book highly enough! It offers a unique and very enjoyable journey through the Baptist Catechism and I think every family should have it. The Illustrated Baptist Catechism currently retails for $19.99 on RefToons.com and is also available in a digital coloring book format that you can print at home for kids to enjoy.
