Review | Seasons Edition Classics

Nothing beats the classics, they say. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dracula, Alice in Wonderland, A Tale of Two Cities, are just some of the classic novels we grew up with, containing the stories that shaped and guided us, and changed the way we think and live. These books are very accessible to us today more than ever before. With just one click on the internet, you can easily access your favorite titles in the public domain; and if you are a bookish kind of person who loves the feel and smell of tangible books, classics are widely available today in various formats and sizes.

In 2019, Thomas Nelson Fiction announced The Seasons Edition, a collection of fine edition classics. The series is composed of a selection of classics that thematically reflect the season in which the stories take place. Since October 2019, Thomas Nelson has released a total of 16 titles – four for each season. In this review, I am highlighting five titles from the series: Shakespeare in Autumn and Sense and Sensibility from the Fall collection, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes from the Spring collection, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the Summer collection.

First off, these classics are limited editions and they will not be re-printed again. Only 10,000 copies were printed for each title and each copy is numbered. Amazing, right? But aside from the exclusivity of these classics, what separates these books from others is their intricately designed die-cut jackets. Expertly created by in-house award-winning designer Kate Armstrong, the covers beautifully invoke the mood of the respective season. Each also comes with a matching die-cut bookmark, ribbon marker, and removable plastic cover. While it is true that you should never judge a book by its cover, I think I would make an exception with these books. I mean, they are stunning, unique, and very attractive! If I would buy a book because of its cover, these definitely are the perfect picks.

Exclusive release, thoughtful design and cover, what more could there be? The Seasons Editions classics are also made with the finest materials. As I survey these books, I can’t help but be amazed. These books scream quality! From its cover to its paper, the quality is beyond question. The pages are also sewn and bound together in a hard cover, so you can be confident that they are made for maximum durability.

More than the aesthetics and designs, The Seasons Edition classics also provides an excellent reading experience. I love that Thomas Nelson used a highly opaque paper on these books with zero traces of bleed-through or ghosting. They also used a highly readable typeface – which I assume is set at around 11.5-point. These aspects are some of the things that I always consider when buying a book, and these ones really exceeded my expectations!

With the limited availability, stunning design, and heirloom quality of these books, you probably think that the price tag of these classic editions will break the bank. On the contrary, these books are shockingly affordable. Each book retails only for $34.99 USD! With this, you are definitely getting more that what you pay for.

Final thoughts

Thomas Nelson made a wonderful job with the Seasons Edition classics. I am totally impressed by the thoughtful design and effort that they poured into this collection of books so not only us but our children and children’s children can enjoy these ageless treasures. I can’t recommend these books highly enough!
