Review | NKJV Bible Journals

Bible journaling is becoming more and more popular these days more than ever before. With the rising trend in Bible journaling comes the rise of Bible Journals. Most of the major Bible publishers that I know have their own lines of Bible Journals—in different designs, formats, and translations. But the irony is, with so many options to choose from, it is sometimes hard to find the “right one” for you.

In this post, I am reviewing the NKJV Bible Journals – The Gospel and Acts set from Thomas Nelson. This includes five paperback journals: the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts. The concept of these journals is simple and straightforward. They contain pages of Scriptures for reading and lined pages for journaling.

Here are some reasons why I love this set and why it is an excellent choice if you are planning to start your Bible journaling journey.

1. Quality and built

This set of Bible journals is absolutely impressive! I honestly didn’t expect it to be this good. The quality is impeccable and the built is outstanding. I have another set of Bible Journals with the same format and at one glance I can already see the difference. This set screams quality!

The design is minimalistic. The five journals come in a nice, sturdy, slipcase box which looks so beautiful on the shelf. It has a bluish shade of gray that follows the gray color scheme of the complete Thomas Nelson NKJV Bible Journals series. On the cover of each book, you will find a Bible passage that sums up the Christological theme of the respective book.

The paper is thick, highly opaque, and feels so premium—very well-suited for journaling. There are absolutely no traces of bleed-through on the pages which is one of the things you should consider when buying a Journaling Bible. I also like that the pages are sewn and bound together. With this, you can be confident that the pages won’t fall off with constant and vigorous use. At the same time, the sewn binding makes the pages lay open without struggle. The quality of this set is simply beyond question.

2. Text and layout

These journals include single-column Scripture text which I find very pleasant and comfortable to read. The text is set at 12-point which is considered giant print in today’s standard. Book introductions and translator footnotes that provide manuscript notes and alternate word renderings are also included. These extras are helpful as you study and journal through the Scriptures.

On the opposite of the Scripture page is where you will find the lined pages for journaling. These pages have 24 well-spaced lines ample for your notes and reflections. I also like that the margins on all sides are roomy on both the scripture and journaling pages. This layout makes reading, study, and taking notes easy and convenient.

3. Translation

While it is really dependent on preference, I really believe that the New King James Version is one of the most readable and trusted modern translations of the Holy Scriptures. I, for one, am a huge fan of the NKJV. If like me, you love this translation, you will surely enjoy this journaling set.

4. Portability

I love the handy and portable design of these journals! Each journal measures only 5.75” x 8” and is almost half an inch thick—just the size of a regular notebook. If you are interested in a focused study of a particular section or book of the Bible, these journals are a perfect companion. At this size, it is also easier, more convenient, and economical to distribute copies for a group study or discussion. I recommend these for people who are always on the go or those who love to travel light.

Final thoughts

Bible journaling has never been this enjoyable. It is an absolute delight to use the NKJV Bible Journals. Even if there are days you don’t feel like writing, the Scriptures alone printed herein provides a superb Bible reading experience. I highly recommend this incredible set, and I am looking forward to getting the rest of the series.
