Bible Review | KJV Vintage Series

Thomas Nelson just released their new KJV Vintage Series—a set of large print, thinline, text-only Bibles. It is currently available in four leathersoft covers–in black, burgundy, tan, and dark brown. These Bibles were produced with an aim to offer consumers a beautiful, slightly heightened edition KJV Bibles at an affordable price.

I am reviewing the one in Burgundy cover. First off, this Bible is absolutely gorgeous! This is definitely one of the most beautiful non-premium Bibles I have ever gazed upon. The design on the cover is very intricate. There are some archaic designs embossed on the front, back, and spine of the cover that gives the vintage vibe to it. In addition, the burgundy color of the cover has a marbled effect which is very impressive. It is perimeter-stitched and has some gold imprints that are stamped on the spine. There is also a gold “Holy Bible, King James Version” print on the front cover which lives up to the vintage-inspired design. This Bible measures 6.70 x 9.75 x 1.10 in and weighs 1 lb, 10.8 oz. It has the same built and feels as the recently released NET Large Print Thinline Art Edition, which was also produced by Thomas Nelson.

The interior design and layout of this Bible are minimalistic. It has a floral-printed cardstock liner which also serves as the presentation page. I noticed that this format has become the new standard in low-cost Thomas Nelson bibles. The design of the KJV Vintage Series references traditional Bible layouts with its double-column, verse-by-verse typeset. The scripture text is set in an 11.5-point Comfort Print typeface designed by 2K/Denmark. I like the overall layout. It is simple and conventional. However, I find the texts too crammed up together. A little more space between the texts could have made the reading experience better. Nevertheless, the print is bold and sharp, and easy to read. I have no information if the texts are supposed to be line-matched. If in fact they are, it is inconsistent on some pages. There is also some ghosting on this Bible’s 30 gsm paper, but it is tolerable. The words of Christ are in red—a nice shade of red that is not irritating to the eyes.

As aforementioned, the KJV Vintage Series is text-only. This means that this Bible does not include those extras usually found in many Bibles today. This does not have any book introductions, cross-references, translation notes, glossary, and concordance. On the other hand, it has some full-color maps printed on glossy paper and a one-year Bible reading plan. This Bible also has two double-sided satin ribbon markers in gold and burgundy—with the same quality used in Thomas Nelson Premier bibles. It is also smyth-sewn which makes it lay flat when open, and the page edges are gold-gilded.

The KJV Vintage Series is remarkable! I can truly say that it was created and designed with consumers in mind. The design, attention to detail, high-quality materials are praise-worthy. With its price tag of $29.99—you are definitely getting more than what you paid for. If you are looking for a beautiful large print King James Bible at a great value, look no further. You will surely love the KJV Vintage Series Bibles! This would definitely make an excellent gift this coming holidays. Highly recommended!
