Book Review | In The Lord I Take Refuge

The book of Psalms is undoubtedly one of the most-loved books in the Bible. It is oftentimes called the Bible’s devotional book. It is filled with all kinds of emotions, feelings, narratives about life, death, triumph, loss, joy, sorrow—that is why people can easily relate with what’s written in it.

In The Lord I Take Refuge is a collection of 150 devotionals and reflections from all of the 150 chapters of the book of Psalms. Written by Dr. Dane C. Ortlund, this new offering follows his successful, well-received book, Gentle and Lowly.

Compared with other devotional books that I have, the devotions in In The Lord I Take Refuge are relatively short. If you are looking for commentary-level, exhaustive devotions, you will not find that in here. This book offers concise, raw, heart-warming reflections. Each devotion consists of only 3-4 paragraphs. I was surprised that even the longest Psalm—the 119th chapter—only had a three-paragraph devotion. They are short and straight-forward.

I love how Dr. Ortlund reflected on each Psalm. First, he briefly exegeted the context of the Psalm, then dug its rich message, and wrapped it up by pointing it to Christ. The meditations are very pastoral and accessible. They are not overwhelmingly deep but they are not shallow. This book would make an excellent bed-side table book—a good treat to the soul just before you sleep, after a long, tiring day.

Physically-wise, this book is excellently-built—the one thing that I always commend and love about Crossway books. It is cloth-bound with a nice, stunning, beautifully-designed dust jacket—an awesome gift idea for your friends and loved ones. I am looking forward to seeing this in gift editions in the future.

If you are looking for a fresh, new trip through the book of Psalms, In The Lord I Take Refuge offers a short, heart-engaging ride through the Psalter that will surely lead you to Christ. Highly recommended!
