Book Review | A Radical, Comprehensive Call to Holiness

Early this year, Dr. Joel R. Beeke and Dr. Michael P. V. Barrett released a book that they co-wrote together entitled A Radical, Comprehensive Call to Holiness. It is published by Christian Focus Publications under their Mentor imprint.

In this book, the authors make a profound biblical examination of the divine work of sanctification. They expounded it in seven parts, which are divided into 29 chapters. What I love most about this book is its flow and progression. It progresses from definition to application. But the best thing is, you can actually read the book not sequentially. The topics are particularly relevant and can be digested separately.

The first three parts of the book could be summarized as holiness defined. In these chapters, Dr. Beeke and Dr. Barrett lay the foundation down by tackling the concepts of positional and progressive holiness, which are the believer’s justification and sanctification. Then they delve deep into the experience of the new birth, and the link between the directives of the law and the grace of the gospel. The second half of the book, which are parts four to seven, could be summarized as holiness applied. In these chapters, the authors start off by reminding us that studying the Scriptures is the means of increasing proficiency in advancing in the holiness to which God calls His people. Then, they tackle the topics of lust, backsliding, and the erroneous beliefs and modern controversies about holiness; and finally, discussing perfected holiness in glorification holiness consummated – with Christ in heaven.

I personally love Dr. Beeke’s writing style. His books are some of my favorites in my library. As always and as expected, he and Dr. Barrett produced a book that is very pastoral and practical with deep Biblical emphasis. Though the writing is more on academic style rather than devotional (given the nature of the subject), I really enjoyed reading it. The authors written it in a warm, readable, and accessible way.

Studying the Scriptures is the means of increasing proficiency in advancing in the holiness to which God calls His people.

A Radical, Comprehensive Call to Holiness offers just pure meat of Biblical wisdom and teaching on sanctification that will surely help and gear readers in their pursuit of and commitment to holiness. The expositions are clear and straight-forward: we are to be holy because God is holy. If you are intimidated by the topic of holiness, this book is for you.

This book is available in a beautiful, sturdy cloth-bound cover and retails for £29.99.
