Cover and Binding
The cover is brown imitation leather which I find more appealing than the black edition. It is very smooth and soft to the touch and looks very elegant. Its front cover and spine are beautifully printed with gold texts (Holy Bible, NKJV, Thomas Nelson Logo) and patterns. It is smyth-sewn with perimeter stitching, pasted down paper liner, and two double-sided satin ribbons in red and brown.
This, I must say, is one of the best features of this Bible. The highly opaque white paper is ideal for highlighting and minimal writings. The pages are very easy to turn and have gold-gilded edges.
Layout and Typography
As the title of this edition indicates, this is a classic verse-by-verse Bible. I love the layout as many of the printed versions today seem to have gone to a paragraph style. The verses are indented, and the verse numbers are printed in red as with the book and section titles. The font is 10-point in Thomas Nelson’s exclusive Comfort Print® typeface designed by 2K/Denmark, with the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in red. The crisp, consistent, and very readable print is an excellent match to the high-quality paper.
The top feature of this Bible is the 72,000 cross-references that are conveniently located at the center column between the scripture texts. Like the verse numbers, the reference verse numbers are also printed in red. Readable are the cross-references at around 6 or 7-point font. Very great help in studying the Holy Scriptures!
This edition also features a brief introduction to each of the 66 books of the Bible — discussing the theme, major events, author, setting, key verses. Aside from the cross-references, I also love the 165-page NKJV Concordance that is found right after the new testament. Six full-color maps printed on thick glossy paper are also included.
Overall, the NKJV Classic Verse-by-Verse Center-Column Comfort Print Reference Bible is outstanding — physical-wise and content-wise. From its elegant cover to its paper, print, and layout that complements very well, to its cross-references and concordance. This is a must-have, and I would say, one of the finest Bibles I have ever had.
